Dear Parents:
We have a fun year planned for your child. Students will be participating in many varied activities. Our goal is for students to acquire the knowledge and skills for movement that provide the foundation for enjoyment, continued social development through physical activity, and access to a physically active lifestyle.
In order to guarantee all students the excellence learning climate they deserve, physical education rules and a discipline plan are in place for all P.E. classes. The Physical Education discipline plan works in conjunction with classroom discipline.
In addition to these rules there are P.E. guidelines which are designed to make P.E. classes fun, healthy and safe for everyone.
In order for students to participate fully they should be appropriately dressed. Only tennis shoes should be worn to P.E. class. Girls should wear short under their skirts/dresses. Dress appropriately for weather conditions, because physical education classes are mainly held outside! When students wear coats or other outerwear to school please be sure to label their clothes with the student’s name. We have many unclaimed coats left at the end of the year.
Cards, toys, etc. will stay in the classroom during P.E. Although we “HIGHLY” recommend that they bring a water bottle due to the fact that we have no available water fountains outside. Please be sure to label water bottles as well. “ONLY WATER” can be brought to P.E. Any sugary drinks may attract ants.
Please have physicians’ statements on file with school nurse regarding any medical problems, which may restrict your child’s P.E. activities. If your child has any illness that would prevent participation in P.E. for one (1) day please send a written excuses to the P.E. teacher. A doctor’s excuse is required for students who will be unable to participate for two or more days. Students who are required to wear a cast will be restricted from P.E. activities until the cast is removed and the school receives a release from the attending physician.
If your child has Asthma, which only partially restricts his/her physical activity please send a note to school and ask your child to communicate to the coaches when they are having breathing problems. When students are required to run laps, children who are having problems with asthma are not expected to run. We have approximately 80 students every 50 minutes, and its very difficult for us to remember each child’s medical condition. Also, we have substitutes from time to time who may not be aware of you child’s medical needs. It is very important that you talk to your child about his/her medical needs and the importance of communicating these needs to the coaches when necessary.
It is in your child’s best interest that we work together. We will be in close contact with you regarding your child’s progress and conduct during P.E. The P.E. staff has conference period from 7:45-8:30 a.m. This is the best time to contact the P.E. staff.
Thank you,
Physical Education Staff
